The goals of this assignment are to:
A. Conduct a self-assessment to understand our interests and skills.
B. Identify career fields that match our interests, skills and values. Choose one to explore for this project.
Steps:
1. Go to www.nycareerzone.org. There are two important sections in www.nycareerzone.org. One is Career Interests and the second is Job Seeker Portfolio.
2. Click on “Find A Job” on the right side of the page and then create your own FREE account here. When you log into your account it brings you to a page that has two sections. The top section is labeled “Career Exploration” and the bottom section is labeled “Self Exploration.” Under the Self Exploration section are three links:
· Career Interests
· Work Values
· Skills Survey
2. Click on Career Interests to create your Career Interest Profiler. This tool will help you understand your career interests, and how they relate to the world of work. Your Interest Profiler scores will help you determine your strongest work interests and use them to decide upon occupations you may want to explore.
3. Click on ‘Work Values’ to create your Work Importance profiler. It will help you understand what values are important to you in your career field
4. Discuss your career interest and work importance profile on your class blog – What are your career interests? What are your important work values? Do they reflect you? Why do you say so? Give examples.
5. Based on your career interests and work importance profile the website identifies quite a few different types of occupations that may interest you under the “Career Exploration” section. Choose one that interests you the most [does this career choice match what you had listed under your life-vision (assignment # 1)]?
